How to Register for Classes at Rutgers — Step by Step

GhostReg · April 2026 · 7 min read

first time registering at Rutgers and you have no idea what you're doing? or you've been doing it for two years and still feel like you're winging it every semester? either way lemme put you on game twin — here's the full registration walkthrough, what to do before your window opens, how to actually use WebReg, and what happens when the class you need is full.

Before You Register — The Setup

the students who get every class they want on registration day aren't lucky. they did the work before their window even opened. here's everything you need to have ready:

Before Registration Day
check your degree audit — know what you actually need this semester
look up every section of every course on the Schedule of Classes
research professors on Rate My Professors and SIRS
build 2–3 schedule variations in Schedule It
write down every index number you need
clear any holds — billing, advising, immunization
know your exact registration window time
Registration Day
log into WebReg before your window opens
hit your hardest class first the second your window opens
use index numbers directly — don't search
register backup sections for anything that's full
put full class index numbers into GhostReg
After Registration
let GhostReg keep watching full classes
check your email — GhostReg sends confirmation when it registers you
swap backup sections out once you get into first choices
watch for billing deadline — big seat drop coming
verify your final schedule in WebReg before semester starts

The Full Registration Walkthrough

Step by step — registering on WebReg
01
Find your courses on the Schedule of Classes
go to classes.rutgers.edu/soc, select Fall 2026, New Brunswick campus, and search for every course you need. write down the 5-digit index number for every section that fits your schedule.
collect ALL sections that work for you — not just your first choice. more options = better odds.
02
Log into WebReg before your window opens
go to sims.rutgers.edu/webreg, log in through CAS with your NetID, complete Duo 2FA. do this before your window — not when it opens.
stay logged in. WebReg sessions expire after inactivity. keep the tab active.
03
When your window opens — hit your hardest class first
the most competitive section, the smallest class, the one you're most worried about. that one first. everything else waits.
04
Add courses by index number
in WebReg, go to the "Add Course" section and type the 5-digit index number directly. way faster than searching by course name. paste from your notes, don't type from memory.
WebReg will confirm the course name and section — double check before submitting to make sure you're adding the right one.
05
For full classes — register a backup and deploy GhostReg
if your first choice is full, register the backup section so you're enrolled in something. then put all the index numbers for the full class into GhostReg. GhostReg monitors all of them and registers you automatically the moment any seat opens during active registration hours.
don't just watch one section — add every section that works for your schedule. whichever opens first, you're in.
06
Verify your schedule and check for conflicts
after registering, look at your full schedule in WebReg and make sure nothing overlaps. use Schedule It to see it visually if you want — easier to catch conflicts that way.

Common Registration Mistakes

01
Waiting until your window opens to log in
CAS + Duo takes 30–60 seconds. if you start that process at the exact time your window opens, you're already behind everyone who was already logged in.
02
Searching by course name instead of index number
WebReg search can lag under load. if you're searching during peak registration traffic you might wait 10–15 seconds for results. index number is instant.
03
Not having a backup for every class
if your plan A is full and you have no plan B ready, you end up with nothing while you scramble to figure out alternatives. always have a backup section ready to go.
04
Ignoring full classes and hoping they open
full classes DO open — but you won't catch them manually refreshing every few minutes. set up GhostReg and let it watch automatically. that's what it's built for.
05
Not checking for holds before registration day
a billing hold or advising hold blocks you entirely. you find out on registration day when it's too late to fix it fast. check registrar.rutgers.edu at least a week before.
registration isn't a one-day thing — it's a process that starts weeks before your window opens and continues through drop/add week. the students who build the plan, prep the index numbers, and have GhostReg running on the full classes are the ones who end up with the schedules they actually want.

Plan ready. Full classes blocking you?

GhostReg monitors your target sections during all active WebReg hours and registers you automatically when a seat opens. set it up once and forget about it.
