What Is Rutgers WebReg? The Complete Guide

GhostReg · April 2026 · 6 min read

first time hearing about WebReg and you have no idea what it is? or you've been using it for two years and still feel like it's working against you personally? either way lemme put you on game twin — here's everything you actually need to know about Rutgers WebReg, how to log in, what all the buttons mean, and what to do when the class you need is full.

What Is WebReg?

WebReg — short for Web Registration — is Rutgers' official course registration system. it's the portal at sims.rutgers.edu/webreg where you add classes, drop classes, swap sections, and manage your entire semester schedule. if you're a Rutgers New Brunswick student, this is the only place registration happens. there's no app, no alternative portal, no shortcut. it's just WebReg.

it's been around for a while and looks like it too. the UI is not winning any awards. but once you know how it works, it's actually pretty straightforward — the problem isn't using it, it's being fast enough on it when a seat opens in a class you need.

What WebReg Actually Does

WebReg — what's actually inside
01 — Core
Course Registration
add and drop classes using 5-digit index numbers or search. changes take effect immediately — no pending, no review. the seat is yours the second the confirmation loads.
02 — Core
Schedule View
see your current registered courses laid out by day and time. useful for spotting conflicts before they become a problem.
03 — Info
Section Availability
check how many seats are open in any section. this is the number GhostReg watches for you — the moment it flips from 0 to 1, the registration fires.
04 — Info
Index Number Lookup
every section at Rutgers has a unique 5-digit index number. you can search by course name or plug the index directly. direct index is faster — always use it.

How to Log Into WebReg

WebReg uses Rutgers CAS (Central Authentication Service) for login — the same single sign-on system every Rutgers portal uses. here's the flow:

WebReg login flow — step by step
01
Go to sims.rutgers.edu/webreg
bookmark this. don't search for it every time — WebReg search results sometimes surface outdated links and you don't want to be hunting during registration.
02
Choose your semester
WebReg will ask you to select a term. make sure you're on the right one — fall 2026 is currently active for New Brunswick.
03
Log in through CAS with your NetID
your NetID and password. same as your Rutgers email login. save these in your browser's password manager — every second counts during registration.
04
Complete Duo two-factor authentication
Rutgers uses Duo for 2FA. have your phone ready. if you're slow on Duo during registration you're burning seconds you don't have.
05
You're in — stay logged in
don't close the tab. WebReg sessions expire after inactivity. keep it open and active through your entire registration window.

Understanding WebReg Section Status

every section in WebReg shows a status. here's what each one actually means:

Open
seats available. you can register right now. don't wait — open sections close fast during registration season.
Full / Closed
no seats available. this isn't permanent — seats open back up constantly throughout drop/add. this is where a course sniper comes in.
Stop
registration is stopped for this section regardless of seat availability. usually means department permission required or registration hasn't opened yet.

Finding a Course in WebReg

two ways to find a course — search by subject/title or go directly by index number. index number is always faster. here's how to get one:

if you're watching multiple sections of the same course — which you should be — write down every index number that fits your schedule. GhostReg watches up to 10 at once so you're covered on all of them.

WebReg Maintenance — When It Goes Down

WebReg goes offline every night for maintenance, roughly 2 AM to 6 AM ET. during those hours nothing works — you can't register, you can't check availability, nothing. this is built into the system and happens on a regular schedule.

outside that window, during active registration periods, WebReg is live and seats can drop any time. this is why "just refresh manually" doesn't work as a strategy — you'd have to be watching every hour WebReg is active, minus the maintenance window. that's not realistic. that's what GhostReg is for.

What to Do When a Class Is Full on WebReg

this is where most guides just tell you to "keep checking back." lemme be real with you twin — that's not a strategy. seats in competitive sections open and close in seconds. you cannot manually refresh fast enough to catch them consistently.

what actually works is having something watching for you and getting you in the moment a seat opens — without you needing to do anything. that's exactly what a Rutgers course sniper does. you connect your WebReg session once, drop in your index numbers, and GhostReg handles the rest. seat opens during active registration hours → you're in → you get an email confirmation.

no scrambling. no racing notifications. you just find out you're already in the class.

WebReg is just a portal. it's not working against you — it's just fast, and it doesn't wait for you. the students who get every class they want aren't better at using WebReg. they just have something watching it when they can't.
