Rutgers Course Planner — How to Build Your Perfect Schedule

GhostReg · April 2026 · 6 min read

winging your schedule the night before registration is how you end up with an 8am on Friday and two classes that overlap by ten minutes. ts not it. lemme put you on game twin — here's how to actually use the Rutgers course planner, which tools are worth your time, and how to set yourself up so registration day goes smoothly instead of being a whole situation.

The Rutgers Course Planning Tools

there are a few tools students use to plan their schedule. here's what's actually worth using and what's just noise:

#1
Schedule It — scheduleit.rutgers.edu
official Rutgers planner. pulls live data from the Schedule of Classes, shows your courses visually by day and time, flags conflicts automatically, and links directly to WebReg. use this one. it's free and it's the most accurate because it's pulling from the same data as WebReg.
Use This
#2
Rutgers Schedule of Classes — classes.rutgers.edu/soc
not a planner per se but essential for finding course details, section options, index numbers, and checking professor names before you add anything to your schedule.
Essential
#3
Rate My Professors — ratemyprofessors.com
cross-reference every instructor you're considering. a section at the perfect time with a bad professor is still a bad semester. always check this before committing to a section.
Always Check
#4
SIRS — sirs.rutgers.edu
official Rutgers student instructor rating system. actual survey data from students who took the course. use alongside Rate My Professors for a fuller picture.

How to Actually Build Your Schedule

01
Start with your requirements — not your preferences
check your degree audit and figure out what you actually need this semester. required courses for your major or graduation go first. electives fill in around them — not the other way around.
02
Look up every section of every course on the SOC
go to classes.rutgers.edu/soc and pull every section of each course you need. don't just grab the first one — look at times, locations, and professors for all of them.
write down the index number for every section that could work for your schedule. you'll need these.
03
Research every professor before committing
check Rate My Professors and SIRS for every instructor. takes maybe 10 minutes and it can save you from a genuinely rough semester. don't skip this step.
04
Build 2–3 full schedule variations in Schedule It
plan A is your ideal schedule. plan B uses different sections of the same courses. plan C is your fallback. if plan A is full on registration day you're not scrambling — you have plan B ready to go immediately.
use scheduleit.rutgers.edu to see conflicts visually — things that look fine on paper sometimes overlap by 10 minutes
05
For full sections — put every index number into GhostReg
any section that's already full and in your plan goes into GhostReg. not just the one you want most — all of them that work for your schedule. GhostReg watches up to 10 simultaneously and gets you in when any seat opens during active registration hours.
more index numbers watched = more chances. always add every viable section.

Schedule Archetypes — What Actually Works vs What Doesn't

Works Well
Clustered Days
classes on MWF or TTh with clear gaps. predictable rhythm, easy to plan around. commuting students especially benefit from fewer days on campus.
Works Well
Buffer Between Classes
at least 15-20 minutes between classes. Rutgers campuses are spread out — back-to-back classes on opposite sides of New Brunswick is stressful every single day.
Avoid If Possible
Back-to-Back Everything
looks efficient on paper. brutal in practice. no time to eat, decompress, or actually process what you just learned. one class running long and you're scrambling all day.
Avoid If Possible
Friday 8am or Monday 8am
you know why. we don't need to get into it. if you're building a planner and there's an 8am Friday slot in there, rebuild the planner.
a good schedule on paper means nothing if the sections are full when you try to register. build the plan, collect every index number, put the full ones into GhostReg, and let the system handle the rest while you live your actual life.

Schedule planned. Full sections blocking you?

drop your index numbers into GhostReg and it monitors all of them for you. seat opens during active WebReg hours → you're in. done.
